VUCA is an acronym initially coined by the military. It refers to an environment or situation that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. It is a “hot concept” in management literature these days, with many articles written on its implications for strategy development and leadership. There is no doubt that VUCA aptly describes the environment in healthcare today. Dorothy will describe how Dana-Farber’s strategies and plans are impacted by this environment, and her personal philosophy about leadership in a VUCA world. In addition, she will discuss her transition from Chief Financial Officer to Chief Operating Officer.
Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Dorothy Puhy is the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Previously, she served as the Chief Financial Officer since 1994 and served as its Assistant Treasurer beginning in 1995. She also serves as Chief Administrative and Financial Officer for Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, Inc. and is an Adjunct Lecturer on Financial Management at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dorothy was recently elected to the Board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, serving as Vice Chair of the Board’s Audit Committee and a member of the Finance and Business Performance Committee. She is Chair of the Board and Executive Committee of MASCO (Medical Academic and Scientific Community Organization, Inc.), and is on the Board of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and a member of its Best Practices Committee. Dorothy is a Director and Chair of the Financial Review Committee at CRICO (Controlled Risk Insurance Company), the Harvard malpractice insurance company. She is Treasurer and a board member of AACI (Association of American Cancer Institutes). Previously, she served as Chair to the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers (ADCC).
In addition, she serves on two corporate boards. She is Lead Director and Chair of the Audit Committee at Abiomed Inc. and, at Eaton Vance Corp., she is a Director and Chair of the Nominating and Governance Committees.
