SUMMARY:Saving Our Moms: Organizational Strategies to improve Maternal Health Outcomes\, hosted by NAHSE Greater Boston Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Recent data show that U.S. maternal mortality rates are rising\, and Black\, American Indian\, and Alaska Native people giving birth are two to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts. Emerging data also indicate that implications of the COVID-19 pandemic may further exacerbate these disparities. With that being said\, the NAHSE Greater Boston Chapter has implemented an “immediate call to action” since its inception in 2020 to discuss the ongoing disparities in Maternal Health Outcomes\, and how we could begin reshaping the Maternal Health care delivery model to improve birth outcomes. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn organizational strategies to strengthen healthcare leadership and workforce structures\nGain knowledge and skills to deal effectively with cultural differences to improve maternal health outcomes\nGain an understanding of barriers among patients\, providers\, and the U.S. health care system in relation to racial/ethnic disparities in health care and quality of care\nLearn evidence-based best practices to conceptualize cultural competence and culturally appropriate care\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW! \n\nConfirmed Speaker \nShafia Monroe\, DEM\, CDT\, MPH \nShafia Monroe is a renowned midwife\, doula trainer\, Master of Public Health\, motivational speaker\, and writer. She began studying midwifery as a teenager after learning about the high infant mortality rate in her city. Though born in Boston\, Massachusetts\, she recognizes her Alabama roots and practices traditional African American healing\, using the laying on of hands and herbs for pregnant and postpartum families. She was called to midwifery at age 15\, when she learned about infant mortality and the granny midwives of the 20th century. Monroe is the keeper of African American birth traditions and postpartum rituals. She has spent over three decades studying the life of the 20th -century African American midwife and traveled internationally\, interviewing\, and shadowing midwives to learn their cultural rituals firsthand. \nUnder Monroe’s leadership\, ICTC increased the number of doulas of color\, Black midwives\, diversified the midwifery workforce\, and challenged systemic racism within the profession. From 2002 to 2015\, she directed the International Black Midwives and Healers Conference and recruited Erykah Badu\, four-time Grammy award-winner\, singer\, songwriter\, and holistic healer\, to become the ICTC International Spokesperson from 2010 to 2015. Monroe also led the Oregon Coalition to Improve Birth Outcomes (OCIBO) in 2011\, investigating the use of doulas to improve birth outcomes and creating the legislative concept HB3311. This work resulted in Medicaid reimbursement for Oregon doulas\, with Oregon leading the national model by being the first state to cover doula services for Medicaid families. In 2002\, Monroe developed a groundbreaking doula-training program as an international model for reducing infant mortality\, increasing the number of doulas of color\, empowering families for informed consent and physiological birth\, and teaching traditional birth and postpartum practices using the legacy of the 20th -century African American midwife\, the SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training\, LLC. She created Shafia Monroe Consulting/Birthing CHANGE in 2013\, to train health care providers and doulas in cultural competency for working with diverse population in maternal and child health and improve perinatal outcomes. \nMonroe proudly serves as an advisory member of the Oregon Health Authority Office of Equity and Inclusion’s Cultural Competence Continuing Education Advisory Committee\, Oregon Islamic Chaplain Organization\, the Oregon Community Doula Association\, Alabama Birth Equity Committee\, Black Mamas Matter Alliance\, Black Mothers ACTT for Safe Care Initiative\, and a board member of the National Accreditation Council for Black Doula Trainers. \n

SUMMARY:Disparities in Maternal Health: Connecting Community Advocacy to Clinical Practice\, hosted by ACHE of MA\, MHA & MMS
DESCRIPTION:Focus on DHE&I:\nDiversity\, Health Equity\, & Inclusion Best Practices\nWebinar Series \nDisparities in Maternal Health: Connecting Community Advocacy to Clinical Practice \nWednesday\, May 18\, 2022 | 12-12:45 p.m. \nRegister Today!\nRacial inequities in maternal mortality are staggering\, with Black women experiencing mortality rates more than three times that of White women\, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In Massachusetts\, Black women are twice as likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. These inequities\, the result of systemic racism in health care\, are unacceptable. Massachusetts passed legislation filed by State Representative Liz Miranda (D-Boston) establishing a commission to make policy recommendations aimed at eliminating racial inequities in maternal health. \nJoin the Massachusetts Medical Society\, the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association\, and the American College of Healthcare Executives Massachusetts Chapter to learn more about the commission’s recommendations to address racial disparities and promote equity in maternal health outcomes\, including how to connect these policies into clinical practice. This event is also a part of the Medical Society’s annual John Figgis Jewett Lectureship on maternal health.

In healthcare delivery\, disruptive innovations have the potential to decrease costs while improving both the quality and accessibility of care. Disruptive innovations enable new applications and changes in behaviors. The current thinking with many innovators is a belief that a host of disruptive innovations would have wide implications for payers by shifting payment models to reward precision diagnostic tests and abilities of providers. Several current disruptive innovations like retail clinics\, telemedicine\, medical tourism\, and point-of-care medical payments could make a major difference in how health care is reshaped in the near future. This panel will focus on the role of innovation in the medical marketplace and examples of disruptive innovations that will change lives in health care.\n\n\n11:30am- 1:00pm: Networking Lunch & Membership Activities\n\n\n\n\n1:00pm-2:15pm: Breakout Session\, Powered by Tier 1: Disruption Starts with Empathy-Centered Design – 1.0 Qualified Education\n\nSimple mindset and language shifts go a long way in changing the care we provide. Participants will gain a new mental framework for reimagining how to effect and apply change; process topics with their teams; and begin to more deeply understand which moments can be designed to create joy and alleviate anxiety for caregivers\, patients and their families.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:15pm-2:30pm: Afternoon Networking Break\n2:30pm-4:00pm: Face to Face Panel Session: Consumer Focused Health Care – 1.5 Face to Face Credits\n\nWhile many healthcare organizations recognize that consumer-centered healthcare is important\, very few are following through on those priorities with innovative and effective strategies. Patients are increasingly choosing less expensive and easier to access options than traditional providers. While traditional providers are working to better engage consumers and compete in this new landscape with more and different competitors\, there are many challenges. This panel discussion will lay the foundation by defining what “consumer focused healthcare” is\, why it is important\, and why it is so difficult to transition to a consumer-focused model\, and explore some innovative and effective strategies.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:00pm-6:00pm: Reception and Member Awards Presentation\n\n\n\n\nThe chapter has secured rooms at a discounted rate of $269.00 a night at the Encore Boston Harbor\, should you want to come in the night before\, or stay the night of\, to network with members you haven’t seen in a long time.
